André Rieu July 2012 Column Chapeau Magazine

CONSCIOUS LIVING
Each day I put on my sports outfit with a big smile!
André Rieu July Column, Chapeau Magazine:In my previous column I wrote something about my 'revival', if I may mention it that way. This is particularly due to the fact that I started to work out and that I watch my diet. We are now a few months further on and I must say it really has become a way of living, a different way of living. That sounds pretty extreme, but it's true. I have always worked hard and in between work, I worked out, but not enough. And my job requires top condition. How varied my life is and there is always the habits of sneaking, but you can change them!
My calendar is always full, but that is not to say that you cannot free up time for the really important things. It's a matter of priorities.
Once a new habit is created, it is not so difficult. I notice now that it does not matter whether I am in Sao Paulo or Maastricht. Each morning I just take two hours off to play sports. Sometimes on my own, but usually with my coach Ruud. I am so glad that I've discovered him through my family doctor. He is doctor, nutritionist and exercise expert. And also - what a unique combination -European bench press champion! If you see him, you believe that immediately. He gives me a weekly program so that every day's work out is different.
Sometimes there is a mandatory day of rest. The program is based on the recovery of the musculature. Yes, recovery!! Because if you are moving too little, then your muscle mass naturally decreases as from the age of 25. At my age than you have lost about 50%. That means that you are half as strong. But now, through all my training, I can upgrade to 35% recovery. Then I come to 85%. I think that's not bad for the age of 62. And I do feel the results, I'm fit on stage. That must be, because my profession is like top sports, especially when you also travel the world.
I train with weights but not with devices and that is perfect. Many of the exercises are aimed at the so-called "corset of the body". No, do not be worry, I do not wear a corset, that would be lovely for the tabloids, ha ha! But the so-called corset is, in fact, the center of the body, where a lot of functions come together. Like breathing, I breath differently now than before. No more deeply in the lungs, but through the abdomen. That way is calmer, more balanced. I even talk differently on stage. In that way it also is more relaxing.
I'm no less busy than before, but there is less stress, because I have myself more under control and it's very enjoyable. Besides muscle exercises I am also still running and playing tennis due to the variation. But the muscle exercises are still the base, which make you strong. My son Pierre first had his doubts, now he trains with me and he is very enthusiastic.
Of course I am now also more aware of nutrition. With good food and as much as possible organic products, which usually have more flavor. No, not a diet, I just eat meat, fish, you name it, but in the right proportions and not excessively and I take time to eat. I have lost over 10 kilos weight. Another few kilos and I'm back to my weight of 20 years ago. It feels wonderful. And Ruud also gives me special food supplements. No, not doping, don't worry! Just ingredients which a body that has to achieve a lot needs.
It is very interesting stuff. Too bad that I was never interested in my own condition and health before as that is the most important thing in life! I really live now much more aware, even mentally it has a positive effect.
My enthusiasm is apparently addictive. If we are on tour, like the last weeks in Sao Paulo, I see half of the orchestra in sporting outfits each morning! One group goes to the fitness center, the other goes running. Great! I don't want to come on as a sports freak, but I think I have found the solution. Each day I put on my sports outfit with a big smile, even if I performed the night before. I feel on top. I can really recommend it!

André Rieu and Pierre Kartner in Maastricht

The Collaboration With André Rieu Will Be Continued
(Privé, July 11th 2012, by Yvonne Hoebe) For Pierre Kartner the performances on the Vrijthof in Maastricht were an unforgettable experience. The 77 year old singer is impressed by the enormous versatility of the King of Waltz and he said he had learned of lot. The collaboration went so well, that there will be a continuation for sure.
For some people maybe a little bit over the top, but for André Rieu and Pierre Kartner it was a challenge to provide the Waltz King's entire orchestra with Smurf hats as soon as Pierre Kartner started his famous Smurf Song for the 10,000 people on the Vrijthof.
A few days after the concerts, Pierre is still enjoying the impressions. By coincidence I got this chance and I experience it as an enormous challenge. Ten thousand people on the Vrijthof going crazy, singing along, walking the conga line ... When you perform the Smurf Song accompanied by the world's best orchestra and also 128 men from the Maastrichter Staar, I can assure you that the goose bumps are on your arms. The entourage and everything around it is top of the bill. I have been through a lot in my career, but this was definitely one of the highlights. Of course I knew André, but we never worked together. When he suggested this idea, I was enthusiastic immediately. What will be better than being accompanied by one of the best orchestras in the world? It was a present, certainly at my age.
Gifted
Pierre, who has a strong track record himself and whose songs "The Red Rose Café" and "Smurf Song" have become world famous, appreciates André very much. "I admire him so much. In the first place he is a gifted violinist who already conquered the entire world. I saw him at work during four concerts and also during the preparations. He is a perfectionist, but at the same time a very gentle person. I noticed that during the rehearsals. We rehearsed from 9 am to 6 pm. No dissonance at all, not by him, not by the orchestra members, not by the rest of the crew. Everything goes in good harmony, but there is still a clear discipline. You can only learn from that. André does not feel elevated above his employees, he feels equal. A jack-of-all-trades, he really checks everything, nothing escapes him. I have to admit that I learned a lot in the last few weeks and I am a special experience richer. To see how he runs his company together with his wife Marjorie, who also has a large share in his success, and of course his son Pierre too, that is very special! I was even allowed to spend a few hours in his castle and there you feel the harmony and atmosphere around them. You know what?? I just love that man!"
The collaboration between the Waltz King and the singer/composer is not one-off. "Probably we are going to do more projects together". We'd like to conquer Germany by releasing the "Red Rose Café Song" in a new way. At the same time it'll be a tribute to the German singer Peter Alexander. Showing the concert in cinemas all over the world makes it clear that André and I have an enormous click. We'll continue with that in the future, I can confirm that. Again, he is a world-class artist but above all a wonderful person. I am an experience richer, I have gotten a new friend from whom I still can learn a lot!"

Star violinist André Rieu, tells for the first time frankly about his illness and how he overcame his burn out. He emphasizes the important role his wife Marjorie played. He always fears that it will happen again, but he refuses to think of the end of his career. He was totally burned out and with possibilities of disastrous consequences for his big orchestra. He almost had to let the orchestra members go. Concerts, whole tours, had to be cancelled. An enormous financial disaster. But the maestro is back and he will play four concerts in Maastricht. The Emotional Comeback of André Rieu

The Emotional Comeback of André Rieu
Weekend: July 3, 2012: His new life: more rest,  healthier food and working out.
André Rieu is fully back. After having been disabled for months due to illness, last week he performed again on "his" Vrijthof Square in Maastricht. It was a comeback full of emotions, with the audience as well as with the orchestra conductor and his family. André has become, since he fell ill for the second time, a different person.
André's comeback in his hometown of Maastricht, where his success started long ago, was full of uncertainties. What started as the flu, turned out to be a serious infection on his equilibrium ."Suddenly the room started to spin" he said. Just like the first time, he had to rest. In the beginning André thought it would have ended after a few weeks, but his recovery lasted longer. During this forced rest period, he decided to change his life. He went on a diet, started doing sports and delegated more business tasks. He worried a lot about cancellation of his concerts and disappointing his fans. He also felt responsibility to his almost hundred employees who were out of work now.
Rieu described his frustrations: "I have to take a rest now, to be able to continue my job later. Due to his new way of living, André lost weight. "I now found the balance between enjoying life and living healthier. I feel great. I started to work out every day led by a personal trainer. Three months ago I started running with a heart rate meter. As soon as my heart beat was 140 per minute, I started to walk again. In the beginning that was after 2 minutes. Now I can run for 45 minutes. I eat differently. Two times per week white meat, two times white fish, one time red meat, one time oily fish and one time sinning. I already lost 9 kilos (20 pounds), I feel reborn.
DISASTER
Fortunately enough has been left from the "old" Rieu, to turn his performances into a party, like always. The concerts on the Vrijthof will be the only open air concerts left. Rieu loves the beauty of the square and he feels a special bond with the residents of Maastricht, who discovered his talents during the Hieringbiete (eat herring) parties on the day after Carnival, when André played with his Maastricht Salon Orchestra. After that Rieu became a world star who sells more concert tickets per year than Madonna or Lady Gaga. Watching his agenda, you can see performances all over the world in enormous venues. In July there will be 12 concerts in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Next South Africa, France, Switzerland and Germany. In November Rieu will be in Belgium and Holland and in December he'll perform fifteen concerts in England and Ireland.
To check his health, a doctor and his personal trainer will travel with him. His wife Marjorie and son Pierre support him very much and when possible work out with André. The conductor knows for sure that he can avoid more disasters with his new way of living.
MAYOR
André was touched to perform again on the Vrijthof with his own orchestra to his own audience. The emotions were also felt by Albert Verlinde (reporter RTL Boulevard) en Onno Hoes, the Mayor of Maastricht. They were in the audience the very first concert and they enjoyed the concert , the performance of the Maastrichter Staar Choir, and the guest appearance of Father Abraham. Onno Hoes could also welcome in the audience the former Mayor of Maastricht: Gerd Leers. Mr.Leers was welcomed by the Maastricht audience with applause and cheers. Also secretary of State Mr. Bleker was present with his partner.
John is still on vacation and we want to Thank Ineke for sending this and Translating it!
